Learning is about how we perceive, understand and make meanings about the world. It may involve mastering theoretical principles, understanding proofs, remembering based-on-fact information, acquiring methods, techniques and approaches, identification, reasoning, debating ideas, or developing behavior appropriate to specific situations. These aftermaths are believed to be the by-products of teaching. Every teacher aims to impart knowledge, train students, bring out the best in th
The Creativity-Emotion Link

On the Positive Psychology listserv today there was an article that describes a recent study which looked at the connection between emotion and creative capacity. The authors of this study argue that "excited" emotional states, including enthusiasm, joy, and anger can all improve one's creative capacity. Being calm and relaxed s

Hands Off the Hands-On in School Math??

Okay, I’m not explaining, just reporting this: Dr. Kaminski and her colleagues Vladimir M. Sloutsky and Andrew F. Heckler did something relatively rare in education research: they performed a randomized, controlled experiment. Their results appear in Friday’s issue of the journal Science. Though the experiment tested college students, the researchers suggested that their findings might also be true for math education in elementary through high school, the subject of decades of debates about
Trust and Media Richness Theory

In virtual themes, the literature states that rich media (audio and/or video) does a better job than text in building trust. Would it be reasonable to assume that rich media is also more effective at destroying trust? Could trust in society been weakened by our transitions to increasingly rich sources? In going from primitive TV and AM radio to color television and FM, and eventually HD video made it more likely that we can decipher those micro-emotions that aren’t visible at 30fps? No Tags

Being as fascinated as I am with the abstract concept of the institution, I am finding Butler Shaffer’s Calculated Chaos: Institutional Threats to Peace and Human Survival to be not just perceptive and engaging, but a positively eerie (and more articulate) statement of the beliefs at which I have arrived. And not just the political observations and conclusions: I find the theory of institutional dynamics that Shaffer lays out transitioning quite often between psychology and outright metaphysics
